The Chief Judge (CJ) Team have been crowned
winner of the 2019 edition of the Provost Cup of the College for Legal Studies
Yola after upsetting Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Team 2-1.
CJ Team came from a goal down to win the
envied position.
Two minutes into the game, Marvellous Yahya
opened the score line which was his third goal of the tournament for the SSG
side.
With determination and precision, the CJ side
mounted pressure on their opponent to equal the score line. Muntaka Yusuf utilized
the opportunity created by the porous defence of SSG Team to end the lead in 18
minutes of the game.
This stabilized the game, however, each
side begun to create chances for a goal which
was thwarted by the sealed defences of each side.
In the 30s minute, a foul on CJ’s Team right
winger earn them a free kick from about 24 metres from the goalie line of the SSG
Team. The CJ Team ball juggler, Gift Marvellous kick the ball from the spot to
the 16 yard. In an attempt to clear the ball, SSG Team midfielder, Nuhu Ardo
sent the ball to the right corner of the post with a header to score own goal.
The score line was 2-1 in favour of the CJ Team when the centre referee blew the
whistle for a half time.
The game resume with SSG Team mounting
pressure for at least an equalizer. It resulted to the CJ Team to resort to
defensive tactics. The game continued with massive attack on the luckiest CJ
Team but with no result to the end of the game.
Earlier in the third place match played, the
Head of Service Team who were humiliated 2-0 by the CJ Team in Semi Final match
1, revenged with the same score line against Grand Khadi Team who also lost 2-1
at the hands of SSG Team in Semi Final match 2.
Eight teams have been registered in the
tournament and they were grouped in to two in a knock out group matches.
Group A made up of College Team who were
knocked 2-0 by HoS Team in opening match and the Nigeria Bar Association Team who
were equally sent out of the competition by SSG Team after they were thrashed
3-1.
Group B comprise Lamido Team who lost 2-0
to CJ Team and Speaker Team who were up set 2-1 by Grand Khadi Team.
Highlighting the achievements recorded in
the tournament, the Chairman Organizing Committee of the competition, Ahmed
Kadiri said that the tournament is an annual event organized to motivate and
enhance the mental alertness of the students besides their studies.
Kadiri added that this year’s tourney has
received boost from sports lovers who donated cash and sporting kits to the
College.
On his part, the Chief Judge of Adamawa
State who was represented by the Grand Khadi Waziri said there is potential football
talents in the college who when carefully selected will form a great team in
the state.
Satisfied with the display of skills by the
CJ Team, Grand Khadi Waziri made a personal donation of twenty thousand to the
team.
While the Head of Service of Adamawa State,
Dr. Edgar Amos who was represented by the Deputy Permanent Secretary Political
in his office, enjoined the college authority to form a formidable club from a
selected players who featured in the tournament and be registered to play in
competitions in the state.
Dr. Edgar applauded the students for
behaving well throughout the competition,
stressing that their behaviour speaks much of their school. The HoS
congratulates the winners and promised to donate prize for the Most Valuable
Player in subsequent tournaments.
In his vote of thanks, the Provost College
for Legal Studies Yola, Barr. Suleiman Abubakar thanked all the invited guests
for honouring the invitation and those who donated both cash and sporting kids
to the school.
Barr. Abubakar salutes his students for behaving
well throughout the period of the competition and urged them to always exhibit
good morals which the college is propagating.
Highlight of the competition was the
presentation of prizes to Best Goal Keeper Rilwanu Jatau of CJ Team, Highest Goal
scorer went to Yahya Gankuba of Grand Khadi Team and Best Player award was
bagged by Gift Marvellous of CJ Team.
