On 6th of February 2016, The
Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Adamawa State Chapter has elected its new
Executives to handle the mantle of leadership of the Union for three (3) consecutive
years during the State Triennial Delegates Conference conducted at the NUJ Press
Center here in the state capital. The exercise has resulted to the emergence of
comrade Salihu Abubakar of Adamawa State Television (ATV) as State
Chairman and Alhaji Umar Dankano of the People’s
Daily Newspaper as Vice Chairman. The two were unopposed.
Others that made the leadership list includes;
Zare Baba of the Adamawa Press Limited (APL), Alhaji Shekarau yerima of Gotel
Radio Yola and Madam Tina Valdo of the Adamawa Television Yola (ATV) who were
returned unopposed as State Secretary, Financial Secretary and State Auditor
respectively.
However, Mary Adamu of NTA Yola scored 83
votes to emerge the council’s Treasurer defeating her two contendants;
Mallam Isah Tukur of Adamawa Broadcasting Cooperation (ABC) who scored 67
votes while Mr. Anthony Taru of State Ministry of Information Chapel who got 12
votes.
On the other hand, Muhammad Lawal Paris of State Ministry of Information Chapel clinched
the office of Assistant Secretary by scoring 86 votes to defeat his only
contendant Mr. Emmanuel Njaprim of the Taraba Sunrise Newspapers who scored 74
votes.
Addressing the new Executives and members of
the Union both the Zonal Vice President in
charge of zone E, Hajiya Aishatu Ibrahim kwaya and the Zonal Secretary, zone E,
Alhaji Suleiman Ibrahim Abubakar charged all to observe the professional code
of Ethics and use the Union’s constitution as guiding principles in handling
union matters noting that it will go a long way in addressing issues that may
crop up simultaneously.
They also advised the newly elected executives to from the bottom of their hearts
bear that they are under oath of offices which will subject them to be
Accountable of their actions not only before the congress members but Almighty
God saying “Fear God in making decisions concerning your teaming members
always” they emphasized.
Similarly, the Adamawa State Government has
called on the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Journalists to rise up against
Members casualization by some media owners who are out to exploit them. The
State Commissioner of Information, Comrade Ahmad Sajoh, made the call at the
inauguration of the newly elected Executive. He urged the union to save the noble profession
from derailing from its constitutional role of being the watch dog of the
society.
