The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) would soon begin massive construction of 15km Left Hand Service Carriageway of Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) stage 2 from Ring Road One (RR1) to Wasa Junction in the Federal Capital Territory.

This is coming on the heels of approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday of the sum of 6bn for the project.

OSEX is one of the Primary Expressways in the Abuja Master Plan that runs from the Villa rundabout to Gwagawalada covering a distance of 67km bounding the Southern portion of the City. It is designed to have 10 lanes consisting of 3 lanes of 2-main Carriageways and 2 lanes of 2-service Carriageways.

It would be recalled that the Right Hand Service Carriageway of OSEX from Ring Road One Junction is already operational and being utilized on a dual mode. However, rapid development along that axis of the road has resulted in incessant congestion and chaotic vehicular traffic, leading to loss in precious man-hours by road users.

To this end, the project when completed would protect the Right of Way (ROW) from encroachment by developers and address the prolonged bottlenecks and hiccups being experienced by motorists on daily basis.

Other expected benefits of the road include: serving as an alternative route for motorists from the North East axis of the City to the City Centre through Right Hand Service Carriageway of Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) from Ring Road Three Junction to Wasa Junction, the 5km road recently approved by FEC. It will also provide job opportunities for residents of the territory, among others.
