Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has on Tuesday commiserated with the families of the victims of boat mishap in Gurin.
Condoling the families of the victims of the mishaped boat and people of Gurin at the Palace of the District Head of Gurin in Fufore Local Government Area, Governor Fintiri said that his administration will continue to enlighten its people on the risk of involving in commercial boat operation in inland water ways across the state without using life-jacket.


The boat which mishaped in Kwatam Malam Adamu in Gurin in rain storm on Monday afternoon, according to report from the Red Cross, led to the death of 2 while 12 were recued and many are still missing as of the time of filling this report.
The Governor who lamented on the overloading of people by commercial boat owners while knowing the risk involved, he directed all relevant authorities to ensure that the commercial boat owners follow all safety measures one of which is avoiding overloading before taken off as new regulation for their operation takes effect immediately across the state.


He disclosed that Government will provide live-jackets in areas where canoe or boat is their means of transportation while warning that henceforth violators of the safety order will be dealt with.
Governor Fintiri charged traditional rulers and all those concern to ensure that safety measures are always adhere to by their people and commercial canoe or boat owners. Directing Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, ADSEMA to move to all communities using canoe or boat as means of transportation to ensure their safety.
He appealed to the citizenry to avoid risking their lives, neglecting precautionary measures of avoiding overloading, paddling canoe in rain storm and without using live-jackets.


Responding, the District Head of Gurin, Alh. Abubakar Baba Gurin Abbo thanked Governor Fintiri for condoling his people over the unfortunate boat mishap that led to the death of his people.


The District Head assured to sensitive his subjects on the risk involve in neglecting safety measures while paddling canoe and to ensure they adhere to the new regulation for commercial canoe and canoeists.



It would be recalled that on Friday, over 10 were reported death in a capsized boat in River Njuwa in Yola South Local Government Area. This ugly incident is happening almost yearly in the state in recent years, which reports revealed that majority of the capsized boats was resulted from negligence on the part of canoeists and the persengers.
