The Federal Government of Nigeria through
the National Security Adviser has banned the use of fertilizers in Adamawa,
Gombe, Yobe and Borno States.
In a press release signed by the Permanent
Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Polycarp Ayuba and made
available to Journalists reads in part;
"This is to inform the general public that
the intention of Adamawa State Government to supply farmers with chemical
fertilizers to boost their production has been constrained by an order from the
office of the National Security Adviser", he said.
"The reason is that, terrorists operating in
the North-East of the country use the chemical fertilizers to form weapon of
mass destruction. To slow down their evil pursuit, it is considered wise to ban
the sales and purchase of the fertilizers for now until the security situation
improves. This same ban affects Gombe, Borno and Yobe States."
Government is encouraging its farmers to
find alternative sources such as organic and liquid fertilizers for the time
being.
Citizens are therefore advised to neither
purchase nor sale chemical fertilizers as anyone found in possession of them
will be regarded as a terrorist and be liable to being treated as such.
