Following the measure the Adamawa State Government has taken to cushion the effect of subsidy removal on the citizenry, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has flagged off free distribution of bags of grains to households in the state.


Performing the symbolic distribution, Friday at Government Secondary School Karewa in Karewa Ward of Yola North Local Government Area, Governor Fintiri disclosed that initially the food items which was designed to be sold but now is to be distributed free while cost will be shared between the State and Local Government Areas.


He stressed that those that will not benefit from the free distribution of 60,000 of 25kg bags of rice include the committee and the elites.


Governor Fintiri explained that immediately the Federal Government announced the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, PMS popularly known as petrol, his government has constituted a committee that will recommend measures which will cushion the effect on the people. Governor Fintiri stated that the committee recommended measures which has direct effect on transportation, food items and agricultural inputs.


According to him, his government has already started implementing the recommendation of the committee with payment of special allowance to the state Civil Servants and Pensioners as well as the Local Government Staff. Adding that his government has procured and distributed 100 trucks of high quality fertilizers to Civil Servants and farmers and also procured 10 IVC luxurious buses which will soon be on road.


Stressing that the Committee which is Chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Barr. Awwal Tukur, is mandated to ensure free and equitable distribution of the items to all the Local Government Areas.


The Governor who lamented the effect of climate change on the global economy, reiterated his administration's commitment to tackle it.


He called on the people to desist from felling down trees to make charcoal while revealing his determination to plant more trees to save the environment against global warming which is resulting to flooding.


He called on the people living along river banks to relocate to safer places as there is prediction of flooding in the state.
The food item symbolically distributed free to the people at the venue are mainly 25kg of rice.


Earlier speaking, the Chairman Palliative Distribution Committee, Barr. Awwal D. Tukur, thanked Governor Fintiri for finding them worthy to serve the state in ensuring equitable distribution of Palliative to the people to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal.


He assured that his Committee will ensure it deliver its responsibility accordingly.
